HELPS FOR WORSHIP LEADERS.

E'Davids@HAC Convention2013

(PART ONE)

Keep your eyes open as much as you can while leading worship. You may be engaged with God with your eyes closed but totally missing what is going on with the people.
Don’t look into the ceiling or into the horizon, make eye contact and encourage those who need it.
Do not be distracted or discouraged by those who are sitting down and not doing what you want them to do. They are not against you. They could be just tired.

Look for the ones who are already worshiping and you can get your strength from them. There are a variety of emotions and responses when we first gather with people who are not as ready to worship as the worship team. We can get discouraged if we do not recognize this but there are always those ready to go from the first bar – keep your eyes on them they encourage your spirit.
Don’t preach during the worship time. Too many words draw people to you and away from God. Use your time to worship.

Avoid heavy exhortation. That is telling the people their worship is not good enough and God is not pleased with it. This is like throwing cold water on the people. Instead help them to raise their sight by drawing their attention to the goodness of God.
Choose a mix of songs. Don’t sing all the new ones, just because you've been to a convention or you've bought some new cds. Introduce them one at a time. Please avoid too many key changes and remember the three P’s- Pray, Prepare, Practice.

Be sure your songs include ‘adoration’. I have often found many of our songs are songs ‘about’ God, or songs of ‘declaration’ and songs of ‘exhortation’ but real worship takes place when our songs are directed to God. It is here we are in the place of adoration – looking to Him, worshiping Him – telling Him how we love Him. This you will find engages the people in a very different way.
Be Spirit led as you lead the people and when you are not. Nothing is worse than a worship leader who sounds like Gabriel when before the people and if carnal when away from his or her responsibility. Who wants to follow such a person?

Above all, worship Him more than anyone else in the room. Don’t be afraid to let people see that you live what you ask them to do. Be sure that your own worship, when you are not standing before the people reflects everything you ever ask of them. Musicians can look highly involved and appear to be wonderful worshipers but what are they like when they are not behind a keyboard, drumset, sax, trumpet, guitar or any kind of musical instrument they play? One question that should be answered, not just by the instrumentalists, but also by the worship leaders too.
Please drop your comments below. God bless you.
PS: Part two will follow soon.

HOW TO BECOME A BETTER WORSHIP LEADER

How to Become a Better Worship Leader

Understand your own Christianity in order to become an effective worship leader.
Worship leaders have an awesome responsibility to lead others into the presence of God. Some believe the only requirement for being a good worship leader is to be a good musician or singer. But being a good musician is only the beginning. Understanding the nature of worship and your role in it is crucial if you want to become not only a better worship leader, but also a better Christian.
Tips for Leading Praise and Worship
1.       Spend time with God. This is the single most important thing you can do to become a better worship leader. It's only when you spend time in God's presence that you learn who He is and what pleases Him. You will never be able to lead others in worship if you don't spend time with God.

2.       Listen to God. Ask God what He wants, not only for each individual service, but also for your worship team as a whole. Allow God to direct you in all things. Spend time in prayer before each service asking God to show you which songs He wants for the service. Always be open to new suggestions from God.
E'Davids-Just before The Overdrive

3.       Study the Bible. It's crucial that as a worship leader you know what you believe. Worship leaders don't have the luxury of being lukewarm Christians. If you are not grounded in your faith, your worship will be dry and ineffective.

4.       Be humble. Because leading worship puts you in a position to be noticed by others, sometimes your ego can become a problem. Try to maintain a spirit of humility as a worship leader. Remember, pride always comes before a fall.

5.       Exercise authority. Although you need to maintain a humble estimation of yourself, it's important to exercise the authority God has given you. Take charge. You are the one God has chosen to lead your congregation into His presence.

6.       Avoid rebellion. You will not always agree with your pastor or those who are in authority over you. Sometimes they may ask you to take the worship service in a different direction from what you believe God wants. That being said, you should always try to submit to those who have rule over you unless God tells you otherwise. In the end, God will bless you for your faithfulness.

7.       Pray. Spend time in prayer daily for your pastor, your worship team members, your congregation, and mostly for yourself. If you are not spiritually strong, you will not be an effective worship leader. Pray for God to give you the strength to lead people in a way that is pleasing to Him, and ultimately to become a better worship leader.

Ukenn Cosmos Elevate

Ukenn Cosmos... An all-time God son.
"Father we elevate You, no time to contemplate it, we feel Your sweet embrace, Your Love is never late" this is how the chorus of the beautiful recently released single of Ukenn Cosmos goes...

Ukenn Cosmos, who by birth is christianed Uche Kingsley Iheanacho, is a singer and a songwriter with class and style. Having started music in an early teenage age of 15, he worked with the best musicians and singers even at that time-being a great music foundation for him and those around him, I.e (Singer Sam, Dj Klem, E'Davids, Godwin and lots more), teaching and learning, backing up and soloing in concerts. As a matter of fact, your concert would not be complete at that time around the mile2/okoko axis if you did not invite Ukenn Cosmos as he had a huge fan base because of his blend of R&B-Soul-Jazz-raggae&Pop like singing, small wonder he he proceeded Peter king music college , ilogbo village badagry , where he developed his singing and music skills.
Ukenn has worked and still works with gospel greats like, FLO ROCKA (who featured him in one of his songs titled "Fire" in his debut album) , WOLE ONI. The defunct group-Infinity, and has backed up for Ukenn did backups for  Djinee, Stella Damasus ,Ego (lagbaja), Godbless Eboni, Evaezi, PaulPlay Dairo, Elegant stallion Onyeka Onwenu, Yinka Davies and currently official Backup singer for the Living Legend 2face Idibia .
He also is a winner of one of the Nigerian Gospel Talent hunt by Kelvin Moses. Ukenn Cosmos recently made an official lip into the music industry by releasing a single on 11th of April 2013.

The song titled " Elevated" is a fusion of reggae, R&B and even Ragga, a mix that isn't commonly seen in the gospel music industry and yet very very enjoyable and groovable too.

The song also frees you to Elevate God cause He has done so much for all of us. Knowing that at the end you shall receive spiritual benefits when you elevate God without contemplating. He's been Good to you more than you have been Good to yourself.
Produced by another very creative musician and well respected bass guiterist "Bolaji a.k;a BolajiBeats", and Mastered by Obaro of Morgan Entertainment. This song promises to keep you praising all day long, and is so addictive that you will have no choice but to put it on repeat too.

HOW TO MAKE PEOPLE WORSHIP.

How Do I get The Congregation to Respond in Worship?

E'Davids@ OVERDRIVE live recording.

I have even received emails from worship leaders saying they are so frustrated that they are to the point of considering whether or not they are being called to lead worship because the congregation doesn't seem to be responding. Believe me I know exactly what you are feeling because I have been there myself. As lead worshipers we are geared to be passionate about the Glory of God. Our desire is to reveal the glory of God, and to see the congregation responding. We want to see them raising their hands and we want to see them singing with all their hearts
Now I know that we've all been to services where it seems like the entire church is just involved in the worship. It seems like the spirit is moving and that the congregation is singing loudly, hands are raised high and it seems as if every person in the building is worshiping with all they've got.
If we were to be honest most of the time when we've experienced these wonderful times of worship, it has been in a room filled with worship leaders. Every time I've gone to a conference the worship has been fantastic and I think this is what I want my worship to be like in our church, just people everywhere totally uninhibited in worship to God. When in reality we are in a room full of worship leaders who their passion is worshiping so what else can they do but worship!

Now back to the question. In the past my answer would have been that we as lead worshipers need to teach and model biblical worship for the congregation. That answer is not wrong. However it’s also not the best answer. Being in a mentoring group with Pastor Peter Lord has opened my eyes to the best and only true solution. To be honest with you the answer to this question is so simple and in fact I think when it comes to leading worship we tend to complicate things way more than is then is necessary.
Our job as worship leaders is not to be concerned with the response of the congregation, our job is simply to present the truth of who Jesus Christ is and what he has done and then let the Holy Spirit speak to their hearts through our songs.  I've often spoken that worship is REVELATION IN RESPONSE and it is. However my job as a lead worshiper is to reveal who Christ is and what he’s done through the tools of lyric and music and then allow the Holy Spirit to speak to the congregation to speak to the hearts and they respond to the truth that is just been revealed to them.

A pastor’s job is to speak the word of truth from the scripture. It is not to convert people. It is not to use words to manipulate people into making a decision it is simply to the reveal the truth from the scripture of who Jesus is and what He has done. Then allow the Holy Spirit to do the job of speaking to their hearts and leading them how to respond to the revelation of the truth they've heard.  Anything else is manipulation. We have to leave the response totally to the working of the Holy Spirit.
My friend that is why we must choose lyrics that are scripturally and doctrinally sound. That is why we should be so selective about what we present to the church. Our responsibility is not in the response, our responsibility is in presenting the Truth of Jesus and leave the response to the Leading of the Holy Spirit.
I hope you focus on the the Christ rather than the Congregation henceforth.  Go and Prosper psalmist.

PRAIZAHOLICS

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS PRAIZAHOLIC?
It is a culture of a certain people from the tribe of Praise. They live it, breathe it, talk it, walk it, work it, think it, dream it, sleep it, wake it, huge it, kiss it, romance it, marry it, love it, drink it, eat it, digest it, reborn it, teach it, do it, and the list goes on.... This people never get tired of Praising their tribe RULER and LEADER and MASTER and KING- The ALMIGHTY EL-PRAISON, The God whose praises never ends.

WHAT IS THIS ADDICTION ABOUT?
This addiction is a command, if you don't believe, see for yourself, read on below...

And a voice came from the throne, saying, "Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great." Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns ... Rev 19:5-6.

WHY SHOULD THIS ADDICTION STAY FOREVER?
That question is better answered by the scriptures below too...

... and when they praised the LORD saying, "He indeed is good for His lovingkindness is everlasting," then the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God ... 2 Chron 5:13-14.
He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen ... Deut 10:21.
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, that my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever ... Psalm 30:11-12.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear and will trust in the LORD ... Psalm 40:3.
My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth offers praises with joyful lips ... Psalm 63:5.
Let not the oppressed return dishonored; let the afflicted and needy praise Your name ... Psalm 74:21.

HOW CAN YOU BECOME A PRAIZAHOLIC LIKE US?
Well, that is one question i have been longing to answer. Now check this out...

But as for me, I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more ... Psalm 71:14.
I will also praise You with a harp, even Your truth, O my God; to You I will sing praises with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. My lips will shout for joy when I sing praises to You; and my soul, which You have redeemed ... Psalm 71:22-23.
Let not the oppressed return dishonored; let the afflicted and needy praise Your name ... Psalm 74:21.
Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker ... Psalm 95:6.
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips will praise You ... Psalm 63:3.
O Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may declare Your praise ... Psalm 51:15.
Hear, O kings; give ear, O rulers! I — to the LORD, I will sing, I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel ... Judges 5:3.
Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; speak of all His wonders ... 1Chron 16:9.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come before Him; Worship the LORD in holy array ... 1 Chron 16:29.
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; He also is to be feared above all gods ... 1 Chron 16:25.

WHO ARE THOSE IN THE TRIBE?

YOU!!! You are a huge part of the tribe if you believe all of the above.

DO WORSHIP LEADERS WORSHIP???

E'Davids@Gateway Polytechnic.

CAN WORSHIP LEADERS WORSHIP?

We have been called to worship in spirit and in truth. The standard is high and we cannot fall short of it. Falling short of it would mean that we are not doing things the way we are meant to be doing it. So it is easy to say “let us worship with our spirit, soul and body”, but it is harder to do it if you are a worship leaders.
As worship leaders we become involved in many of the dynamics that take place when the church gathers, we become concerned about how the people are singing or how the instruments are being played and we are conscious of every little distraction. We want to make the right impression so we want the right songs to be sung, the latest or the fastest, but we are not always able to listen to the voice of the true Worship Leader, the Holy Spirit who is left waiting in the wings. Sometimes we can also get carried away by our favorite song and forget that there is a whole group of people that we have left behind, not to mention the Holy Spirit who is looking to be involved!
I have realized one thing; I can only bring the people as far as I myself have ever gone in worship. I can talk about great things, but I need to demonstrate it before the people so that they can see it and not just hear me talk about it. Yes, it is hard to be doing and listening and seeing all at the same time, but the call of a worship leader is a hard one. It is not just leading people in songs, not just introducing new styles or new songs, but it involves bringing disenchanted, disengaged, and disoriented people into the presence of the Almighty and giving them a chance to touch His presence and be changed for evermore.
So before we can lead someone in worship, we ourselves have to become worshipers.  Worshipers  who are concerned not about the person standing next to us, but about the Person to whom our worship is directed at, once we have overcome this fear, we are ready to begin to lead.

Preparing To Lead Worship
Preparing ourselves to lead is the most important thing that we can do.
I have noticed, the mood or attitude that I carry as I lead people is the attitude that I communicate to the people. And the people are good followers at least of this. If I am frustrated at something, I will not be the happiest person in the congregation! And the people will surely follow.
Preparation does not begin on Sunday morning, when everybody in the worship team is ready, but somewhere during the week, when my heart connects to God and I begin to ask him what he wants to do in a particular service. I really like it when God gives me a focus followed by Scripture and then I am able to help the people to experience that which God wants them to. It is so easy this way. At other times, I am struggling to find where God wants to bring us and usually on those days, I am the one pushing the cart uphill!
As worship leaders our hearts have to be right with the Lord. And if we are to lead the people, we are to be right with the people also. Many times we are only right with God and we forget that we have to be in right relationship with men also.
Some say that we do not need to prepare but we go about things as the Spirit would lead us. I love it that way myself. But the same, Spirit that speaks on Sunday can speak to us earlier in the week, if we would only listen to him. We think that He comes alive only on Sunday mornings but Jesus did promise the Holy Spirit would show us things to come.
Preparing our hearts is the most important thing. Having heard the Spirit, we then need to prepare for what we want to do. As someone has said, there are three P’s that we need to take care of as we seek get ready for leading the church in worship – Pray, Prepare and Practice.

Praise and Worship
Years ago, there was a time when I thought that we had the best worship in our church this side of heaven and on this part of the globe. Until one day, a visitor observed, “You tend to sing only fast songs – I mean praise songs. Have you ever wondered that you could also use slow songs once in a while?” I was about to reply “We don’t sing slow songs; we are a lively church and not a dead church.” But I had a check in my spirit and I kept quiet. That ignited a lifelong quest within me to find out what he meant.
Soon after a ‘Praise and Worship’ wave hit the Indian churches. I do not mean in the literal sense of the word but a mere copy of the real thing. We were still singing songs in the first part of the service and then the pastor would announce, now we are going to ‘praise and worship’. This would generally mean ‘choruses’ both slow and fast. After three choruses, the pastor would signal those leading and everything would come to an end!
We have come a long way from that, but on the other hand, we have a long way to go still!
If you missed this wave, you did not miss anything. The Spirit is doing something completely fresh in terms of praise and worship in the Indian church. Talk to the right people and learn, get the previous issue of Spirit and Word and read! You will surely be blessed.

Structure and Spontaneity
You can go into some churches and you can tell what will happen next. You can also tell at what time the songs will end and the testimonies begin! If you take up the offerings after the testimonies, it is almost an unpardonable sin. People will object if you miss some part of the routine. They will feel left out and as if they have missed something. It is not at all hard to guess what will happen next. That’s how structured they are.
But then you can also go into churches and not know anything about the whole service. There is hardly any structure, only chaos. Sometimes it is the worship, and then at times it is only preaching. Sometimes the services have a western flavor and at other times it is quite local and simple. You can hardly guess what goes on there. That’s how unstructured they are.
So what should we choose? Should we try two prayers-three songs-testimony-offering-message-benediction or something totally spur of the moment? I think the balance should lie somewhere in between. We should be structured enough to hold together all that we want to achieve and flexible enough to allow the Spirit to move freely through the order of our churches and even disrupt our order.

Timely and the Timeless
“Once in a while, can you sing an old hymn?” says an old timer, while the next generation wants a new song each Sunday morning.
“I can hardly keep pace with your pitch and rhythm. I find myself just reading the words” say some, while others say “Those oldies have 10 stanzas and they all sound the same, beside I can hardly relate to them”
Our songs should not be too old and too familiar that they lose meaning. “Familiarity breeds contempt” is a good adage here. But then too many new songs also will leave a good portion of the church empty. We need a balance. We have to find songs that our people can relate to, tunes that people can pick up. Besides, there are hundreds of ‘middle order’ songs, which both groups can enjoy in the church. But our goal is not just to sing what keeps the people happy for we will never please everyone – our goal is to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit using those songs that will take us to where HE is leading and that keep all involved.
Every now and then, the church should sing old classic hymns. This will remind us that the Church is not something that has just arrived, but something that has roots dating back centuries. And then there should be songs that are fresh, new and hot off the oven, which will lead the church into worship that they have never encountered before. New songs keep us fresh and relevant the older ones help us never to forget our history.
In our church some of the best moments are when we sing a classic hymns like “Tis so sweet…” and the anointing of God is as fresh upon it as the day it was written and then there are times the congregation roars in praise and adoration in Spirit led songs… that just seem to flow out of the keyboards into the hearts of the people.

Those leading and those being Led
Worship leaders are not those who happen to sing better than others but those who have an ‘anointing’ to lead people into the presence of God. Their anointing enables them to discern the heart of God and the people so that they can help both to meet. They hear the leading of the Spirit, understand His direction as they choose the songs that help us arrive where the Holy Spirit would take us. There should be a clear distinction between the person leading the worship and the worshippers in terms of choosing the songs and leading the people, but otherwise there should be no gap between those leading and those being led.
The congregation needs to be involved as much in worship as possible. They need to encouraged from time to time, but not distracted with all the directions that you try to give them as you lead. Worship leaders can be frustrated preachers who use their time to ‘preach’ which turns into a distraction and turns an active worshipping congregation into passive listeners.
I always remember my father, Thomas Mathews saying to me when I did anything like this as I led, “Do what you want the people to do. Don’t just keep telling them to open their mouth and praise, you open your mouth and start praising and they will follow.” At times, my wife comes and tells what a wonderful worship experience she was having until my ‘encouragement’ threw her off balance and she lost touch with that sense of ‘Presence’ that was there.
Being clear about who leads the churches worship, does not mean as leaders we never listen to the congregation. The congregation can really be caught up with God and we need to pay attention to their response. There are times when loud and boisterous praise comes from the congregation and the worship team is ready to slow down and go back to our seats. I always respect what I see is happening in the heart of the congregation when you know they have the heart of God. I immediately respond to that and pick it up to further enter into the presence of God.

Voice Care

Hi singer,
It's so nice to see that YOU are amongst the few people that actually want to take care of their voices! Without wasting any of your time, let’s go!

Eat and Drink:

It is important to not eat any greasy foods or milk products. If you must eat quickly before a performance, try not to eat to much, your lungs won’t expand as much if your stomach is full! It is also SUPER IMPORTANT to drink plenty of water starting at least 2 hours before you begin to sing.

Exercises and Warm-ups:

I always exercise furiously the night before a day performance. I also do about 20 minutes on my elliptical the morning of. It really helps to pump your energy and get you feeling warmed up. Another SUPER IMPORTANT thing to do is work the tension out of your neck and shoulders. You would really be amazed at the amount of pressure you carry in this area, but it is very important to keep it loosened so as to aid in proper air flow. Of cause  doing scales as part of a warm-up is very important, but there are also some fun ones that help to get you ready. Make huge faces (raise your eyebrows and stretch your mouth), do slides, and sing a little of your song.

Something to know: raising your eyebrows while singing DOES improve your pitch

The first thing that I usually ask a singer is "how well do you hear yourself in the monitors?" Often, they are not hearing themselves sing on stage, so they figure that the audience can't hear them sing and push their voice harder than what is natural. The result is that the tone becomes dull or strident and often intonation problems occur. Talk to your sound man and make sure that you have enough of your voice in the monitors. If you've got the funds, invest in a headset microphone.

Clearing My Throat

Some say that you should never clear your throat, but excess mucous inhibits free vocal cord coordination. The trick is to find a way to clear your throat without irritating it. Do a gentle "whispered cough" (without tone) and then swallow. Repeat. If this doesn't work, you need to deal with the excess mucous production. Squeeze a 1/4 of a lemon in a tall glass of water and sip over about 20 minutes. This should cut through a lot of the excess mucous. Furthermore, watch your dairy intake... especially cheese, shawama, or anything that has fat-like ingredients, you know, like Butter, Mayonnaise, etc. You should never eat it on the day of a performance!

Singing With A Soar Throat

Depending on what's causing it, singing with a sore throat can be catastrophic. I tell my clients, "if it hurts to swallow, don't sing!" Conversely, if it's a mildly soar throat, consult your doctor (it's a good idea to find a good ear, nose, throat specialist in your area and build a relationship with him) and then use your best judgment. Dry air, singing abusively, and viral/bacterial infection are some of the more common causes of a sore throat. Some people just wake up with a sore throat every day of their life. I've found that the majority of those people have acid-reflux, which means they are burping up stomach acids while they are sleeping or sometimes even while they are awake. For most, however, this happens in the night, so they may be completely unaware of the problem. They then wake up with a scratchy, raspy voice and a sore throat.

Vocal Therapy

Nodules in the vocal cords develop due to abuse and misuse of your vocal cords closing with too much force. The constant forceful banging together of your vocal cords can lead to the growth of nodules at the spot where they come together with maximum contact. When nodules start to form a tiny reddening can be seen on the edge of the vocal cord. With time a nodule or bump forms and becomes hard, in the same way that a callous forms on the palm of your hand if you work without gloves.

There is never any pain during the growth of nodules. The most common indicator that nodules exist is a hoarse and breathy sound of your voice. Visit your doctor immediately if you have any pain.

The remedy for vocal cord nodules typically includes voice therapy. Voice therapy should be performed for a minimum of six months twice a week in thirty-minute sessions.

Surgical removal alone is not recommended, because you must eliminate the causes of vocal cord nodules. Without an understanding of why you developed nodules they are likely to come back no matter how often you have nodules removed surgically.

If you are already a singer who has developed vocal cord nodules due to improper singing methods, then you should begin from the ground up in order to rediscover the right amount of compression to use. Proper singing lessons will give you a terrific head start towards fixing your voice. The aim of proper singing lessons and vocal exercises is to enable you to sing from the bottom of your range to the top of your range effortlessly.

If you are just beginning to sing then you should start out with the proper singing lessons and you will never have to worry about developing vocal cord nodules.

I'll really appreciate if you can share this link with your friends and also leave a comment or ant question you would love for me to answer as regards your singing. Reach me on 07082222827 or edavids@live.com and myedavids@gmail.com

Best wishes, enjoy your voice!

WHAT SHOULD SINGERS DRINK?

WHAT SHOULD SINGERS EAT AND WHY?
Q: "What are the best drinks and beverages to drink before a performance or recording session?"A: When it comes to nutrition, it can get pretty complex, so my message to singers is: Keep it simple.
Your body needs energy so that it can perform for you. I strongly advise against going hungry the day of a recording or performance. Hunger will stress-out your body which needs nutritional energy and hydration to deliver good vocal performance.

Water

The sound of your voice is created by small internal muscle movements. Muscles need the energy furnished by well metabolized food in order to function well. They also need to be hydrated to achieve peak energy, flexibility and elasticity. Drinking room temperature water as your principal beverage is best for hydration. Room temperature is better than iced because when you swallow, the water flows down the esophagus behind but adjacent to your larynx (voice box).

If the temperature of what you've swallowed is either cold or hot, it will affect the muscles of your larynx and vocal folds. This would be like putting a hot or cold compress on your leg muscles right before running a race. So drink your hot or cold drinks after the rehearsal, show or recording session. Before or during performing, just drink room temperature water.

Caffeine

What about caffeine?

Caffeine is a diuretic which induces urination and tends to dehydrate the body. Coffee which contains caffeine, acid and oils, can irritate the vocal folds, stimulating mucous production and stiffness. You may experience a slight burning or irritation of your vocal folds or need to clear your throat after drinking coffee. For some, the adverse effects disappear after a while. If you decide to continue as a coffee drinker, be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day ( as much as 8-8 oz. glasses daily). This will help to flush out your system and restore the bodily fluids that have been lost due to the diuretic effect of caffeine.

Cola and many other carbonated drinks contain added caffeine and will have a similar effect. As well, the carbonation may cause burping at inopportune times while singing. Black teas contain less caffeine than coffee and may work as a substitute beverage as would herbal teas.

Rules to follow:

  • Do not drink coffee or caffeinated beverages within two to three hours prior to singing.
  • Do not drink iced beverages within two to three hours prior to singing.
  • Do not drink hot beverages prior to or during singing.
  • Eat high water content fruit for hydration and energy.
  • Eat high water content vegetables for hydration and minerals.
  • Do stay fed, but don't overeat or stuff yourself.
  • Drink lots of room temperature water.
